All Salts are Not the Same

Dendritic Salt Dendritic salt is commonly used in commercial bath salt preparations to prevent caking and extend shelf life. It holds scents well and dissolves easily. In spite of these apparent benefits, it is table salt, which is sodium chloride without the beneficial trace minerals and electrolytes. Also is it chemically altered chemically altered using slightly toxic ferrous cyanide. Although it is considered safe for synthetic fragrances, nothing like this should ever be used with essential oils, which may enable passing membranes. That is why in aromatherapy we never use any harmful, synthetic or chemical ingredients.

Dead Sea Salt This is the choice bath salt. The Dead Sea in Israel is the lowest level land on the planet and this sea has the highest salt concentration in the world. It is also more dense in trace minerals and electrolytes than any other salt. Because of this nothing can live in the Dead Sea - it is 33.7% salt - almost 9 times that of the ocean. It is not safe to drink it - even a little. It is wonderfully healing when you soak in it though! You will find is deeply relaxing and relieving. Epsom Salt Epsom salt comes from salt water that has had the sodium chloride removed. This leaves a high concentration of magnesium, which is soothing to the muscles - a natural relaxant. It detoxifies by pulling lactic acid from the body. It is inexpensive and you can get it in most local pharmacy, supercenters and supermarkets.

Pickling Salt Pickling salt is appreciated for is fineness which allows it to dissolve instantly. Also for its clear color. It is just table salt, but with no additives to prevent caking to discolor it. It can be found at the grocer, but it has little value as a bath salt.

European Spa Salt European spa salt is simply Mediterranean sea salt. It is similar to table salt, but is an organic sea salt with higher concentrations of beneficial electrolytes.

Solar Salt This attractive chucky grain salt is popular in aromatherapy salt jars. This is the same salt you buy for aquariums, so you certainly can soak in it. It takes a while to dissolve in warm water. Make sure whatever you buy is pure because coming from salt water lakes, it can contain pesticides. You never want something like that in any aromatherapy blend. The mineral content is like sea salt - natural and good, but for therapeutic baths we really prefer something stronger.

Hawaiian Red Salt This red salt gets its color from Hawaiian volcanic red clay. The red clay is rich in its own healing properties. Clay removes toxins and even infections. For this reason it is used for sore throats, wounds, and cold sores. Its antibacterial properties along with that of salt help heal cuts and sores. The red clay salt is also great for muscle injuries.

Icelandic Brine Salt Icelandic Brine Salt is taken from a steaming hot (plus 300 degrees subterranean pool. This pool is a mile below the surface of Iceland. It has 60% less sodium chloride than regular salts, and is rich in silica. Silica is essential for bone, joints, hair and nails. It also has a healthy composition of trace minerals. Icelandic Brine Salt dissolves easily in water and due to the low sodium chloride and to the silica present, it makes the skin super smooth and silky. It is great for dry, itchy or flakey skin.

Black Sea Pink Salt This salt from the Black Sea, which is rich in coral reefs, contains large amounts of beneficial halophilic bacteria. The bacteria and the naturally high mineral content are remarkably healing for skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. It is the bacteria that give the pink color. It relieves the pain of arthritis and rheumatism. It was used as an ancient’s youthful skin secret.
